– Katy Butler

Unfinished Business

Feeling overwhelmed by the thought of leaving behind unfinished business or burdening loved ones with unresolved matters? ‘What Truly Matters’ offers a compassionate pathway to addressing these concerns. This course not only helps you confront the discomfort surrounding mortality but also provides practical solutions for organizing your affairs and articulating your wishes.

Get going on what you know you need to do!

If there’s one thing I hear over and over again, it’s some variation of “I know this is important, but I just never quite know how to begin.” This course will help you clarify not only what tasks need to be done, but also guide you to break them into actionable steps to get started on today.

  • “Am I truly living my life to the fullest?”
  • “What are my priorities?”
  • “What will I leave behind for my loved ones?”
  • “Are my paperwork and material things in order?”
  • “How can I prepare myself and my family for my death, whether it is years away or coming soon?”
  • “Do I have clarity on my end-of-life wishes and preferences?”
  • “What steps can I take to ensure my affairs are in order?”

This is why I created the easy-to-follow, step-by-step course,

What Truly Matters.

Curious exactly what you’ll learn in the What Truly Matters Course?

Intro Module

In the Introductory Module you’ll get an overview and hear why I think exploring the subject of death is both important and enlivening. I’ll also explain the structure of the course and what I mean by the “action steps” you’ll be creating for yourself. Then I’ll lay out the imaginary scenario that will start you on your way for this 7-module course.

Module 1

In the Physical Module, you’ll use the reflection questions in the workbook to think about your physical body and your physical environment. Whatever your biological age or stage of physical health, you’ll be considering: what truly matters when you think about your body and the end of life?

Module 2

In the Spiritual Module, you’ll have space and time to consider your beliefs and practices. You might already know what is true for you, or you might explore new angles of what spirit means to you. Once again, the reflection questions in the workbook will guide your exploration. And as always, I’ll be asking: Have you shared your thoughts on this aspect of life with those who matter to you?

Module 3

In the Module about our Emotional Lives and Relationships, you’ll be swimming in your (undoubtedly) rich and complex emotional life. This is a big arena for we humans! You don’t have to solve everything, and sometimes “lack of resolution” is exactly where things land. But whether you are intrigued by gratitude or forgiveness, see if you can enter this realm with an attitude of curiosity and possibility.

Module 4

In the Legacy and Meaning Module, we explore the meaning of our lives – a big topic! You’ll think about what truly matters to you to leave behind for others who remain. The reflection questions will help you think about the many layers that comprise legacy thinking.

Module 5

In the Practical and After Death Care Module, you’ll be thinking hard about your practical paperwork – is it all up to date and in order? If not, you’ve already got an action step, right there. You’ll also be thinking about what you’d like to have happen after you die. What matters to you at this stage? No, sorry, you cannot opt out and say, “Doesn’t matter to me, I’ll be dead!” Let’s get to work!

Module 6

The final module is called Next Steps for a reason – you are just getting started on a life-long journey of experiencing how the awareness of your mortality enriches how you live. Enjoy this module as a vital way to pull all of the pieces together. You are going to love what you create in this one… open it up and see!

How we spend our days is how we spend our lives.

Meet your facilitator

I typically introduce myself as a death doula, end-of-life educator, and podcaster, and let me tell you… this is often a conversation starter! Then I tell whoever I am speaking to that my work is called Best Life Best Death, because I believe that facing our DEATH helps us to find out what matters most in our LIFE.

As a teacher of various subjects for over 30 years, I bring passion and creativity to the evocative subjects of mortality, end of life, and death. This self-paced online course is a variation on a class I’ve been teaching over zoom for some time. We’ve created step-by-step directions to walk you through the process, and I think you’ll find the material quite engaging. I believe in expanding this work as widely as possible, so I wanted to create a way for folks to explore without having to commit to a particular time for a class or necessarily have a ‘group’ experience.

As one of my colleagues and mentors, Dr. Sarah Kerr, says: “We can do death better.” I believe that with all my heart, and I think ‘doing death better’ begins by learning about it with an open heart and an open mind.

When I am not immersed in the end-of-life field – working with clients, teaching, offering presentations, or creating podcast episodes – you can find me playing with my dogs, walking or strength training (I became dedicated to this after a leg break in 2017), or hanging out with my husband and two daughters. (We often play euchre online!) I’ve been married for over 35 years, for better or worse, and appreciate the ease of old friendships and the discovery inherent in new ones.

You can do the course from home, from anywhere in the world, and on your schedule.

You can complete the What Truly Matter’s lessons from the comfort of your couch, kitchen table, favorite coffee shop, or even the park – as long as you have internet connection!

You can go at your own pace and on your own schedule. No mandatory zoom meetings required!
